The large “Chief” sign stands adjacent to the railroad tracks in historic downtown Durango, Colo., an advertisement for the Toh-Atin Gallery which sits across the street. The vintage marquee was moved from the original Chief Diner on Main St. to its current location in the early 80’s. The sign depicts a Native American man clad in blue jeans, and vest — which many see as a caricature of Native America, perpetuating harmful stereotypes.
