Stands of beetle-kill pine flank the mountainside along Wolf Creek Pass in Southwest Colorado. The slightest increase in temperatures allows the pine beetle to thrive and invade the trees. Many of the forested regions in Colorado have suffered as a result. Varieties of bark beetles, such as the Mountain Pine Beetle and the Spruce Beetle burrow into the trees and kill them, leaving a forest of standing dead in thier wake. Climate change has severely exacerbated this problem in a once healthy forest ecosystems, where bark beetle populations continue to thrive due to increased temperatures and drought weakened forests.
