Inconsistent winter snowpack has raised concerns, as many fear a shift from winters with heavy snowfall to warmer dryer winters that will soon provide insufficient precipitation to replenish the natural aquifers which refill when rain and snow percolate deep into the soil. Aquifers are an important source of freshwater for humans and for rivers. As usage increases in the West, these vital aquifers may soon be unable to keep up with the demands for water each summer.
