Flaring from natural gas wells lights up the night sky in the San Juan Basin of northern New Mexico. Flaring is a common way to burn off uncaptured methane gas during oil and gas production, before it is released into the atmosphere. The production of natural gas has dominated the Four Corners landscape in recent decades, but those energy reserves are drying up, leading to more aggressive extraction methods such as fracking.
