The San Juan Generating Station emits huge amounts of carbon dioxide. This coal-fired, electric power plant located in northwestern New Mexico is situated adjacent to the San Juan Coal Mine, and is scheduled to close in 2022. “The San Juan Coal Mine is one of the biggest, single methane emitters in the region, a potent greenhouse gas,” according to High Country News. Discussion are underway for a proposed retro fit that would capture carbon dioxide from the power plant — possibly changing the future for one of the largest coal-fired power plants in the Southwest.
